If you’re shopping for a microscope for 10 year old children there are a few things to consider to be sure your little scientist gets a terrific microscope that is high-quality, but also affordable. The great news is that these days high-quality kids' microscopes are very affordable.

Here are some tips to help you choose the best microscope set for your 10 year old child:

Consider the Microscope’s Image Quality

You may not be investing in a graduate-level microscope for your 10 year old, but that doesn’t mean you should throw performance out the window. Choose a microscope or a microscope set that offers different levels of magnification up to at least 400x. Generally monocular microscopes are adequate as an entry-level microscope for kids 10 years old and younger.

Choose a Light, Durable Microscope for a 10 Year Old

For under $100 you can purchase a lightweight microscope (less than 5 pounds) that will be easy for your child to work with. With that in mind, don’t purchase a microscope for a 10 year old child that’s all plastic. Not only will it not hold up well to use, but by purchasing a high-quality microscope in a metal case, you’ll help your 10 year old feel grown up.

Think About Power

Some cheap children’s microscopes will only run on batteries. If you can find an unit which can run on batteries or AC power that’s ideal … your 10 year old can take his or her microscope out into the backyard to run on batteries. Your son or daughter can also use it in their junior laboratory (bedroom) while it’s plugged into the wall.

Make Science Fun for Your 10 Year Old

One of the best ways to get kids excited about working with their first microscope is to pick out a model that they’ll instantly fall in love with. Choose a junior microscope set that comes in your child’s favorite color. It’s a great way to make this gift special and exciting for your ten year old!
